The programme runs:

  • Face to face (4 hours sessions)
  • Interactive online sessions via zoom (4 hours sessions, 2 each)

Structure and duration: 

Full programme: 40 hours

Individual Module: 4 hours 

The programme consists of 10 Modules: each Module is covered in 4 hours  

Teachers can register for one Module (2 sessions- 2 hours each).

Module 2: Playing with words: ways to teach vocabulary in context

In this course teachers will learn about a variety of ways and techniques to teach vocabulary,  develop their skills in teaching vocabulary in context and how to make students play with words in contexts that makes it memorable, sociable and accurate; they will be able to understand how words are learned and sources of vocabulary for classroom use including coursebooks, corpora, and dictionaries. They will learn approaches to presenting and consolidating vocabulary knowledge and ways to test it. Teachers will be able to apply techniques and use methods which they can use in their classroom straight away. Teachers will be able to use and create their own techniques suitable to their learners’ level and context.

Module 3: Creative techniques to teaching grammar communicatively

In this course teachers will learn about communicative language learning and teaching and how to teach grammar communicatively. They will be able to learn about grammar in process, noticing grammar, emergent grammar and process teaching of grammar. Teachers will gain insights into classroom activities for grammar such as grammaring tasks, consciousness-raising tasks and grammar emergence tasks. Teachers will be able to apply techniques and use methods which they can use in their classroom straight away. Teachers will be able to use and create their own techniques suitable to their learners’ level and context.

Module 4: Drama and improvisation in teaching languages

The course focuses on practical drama techniques and activities for use in the language classroom. Topics include drama games, mime, simple classroom drama ideas, statue theatre, role-play, simulation, improvisation, working with sketches, creating dialogue, devising scenes, forum theatre, readers’ theatre, rehearsing sketches, storytelling techniques, process drama and performing poems. Teachers will be able to apply techniques and use methods which they can use in their classroom straight away. Teachers will be able to use and create their own techniques suitable to their learners’ level and context.

Module 5: Language teaching through video telling techniques

In this course teachers will learn about innovative techniques in using videos and films in the foreign language classroom, they will identify and investigate various types of narratives that they can associate with and most importantly how they can use these narratives for the purpose of language production tasks and language study. They will also discuss techniques to use stories coming from the videos, which can be used in the classroom. They will share some interactive video telling activities and demonstrate how to use them to get students listening, thinking and speaking. Technical, practical and pedagogical issues will be addressed along the way.

Module 6: Language teaching through chants and songs

In this course teachers will learn techniques and methods on how to use music, chants, and songs for effective language teaching and how to focus on language and skills through chanting and singing. Teachers will learn to design lessons around popular music in the target language including vocabulary learning and theme learning. Teachers will learn about presenting the target language through melodic music, expanding yet further the learning modality options for students (aural-musical). They will learn how to enable their students to respond with language elements to upbeat, melodic music which makes them completely engaged in the language elements and skills activities. Teachers will be able to apply techniques and use methods which they can use in their classroom straight away. Teachers will be able to use and create their own techniques suitable to their learners’ level and context.

Module 7: Spontaneous teaching of language: a new approach
